April 15, 2008
- Remember that we will be having a field trip this weekend:
- Leave at 8 am on Saturday April 19 and return approx 7 pm on Sunday April 20
- We will camp in the Coconino National Forest, dispersed camping (no campground/no facilities) near the Arrowhead Sink, just south of the Wupatki National Monument.
- On Saturday, we will map the area around the Arrowhead Graben and Sunday we will look at other faults, cinder cones, and the Little Colorado River
- It is likely to be freezing on Saturday night, so please plan accordingly in terms of your gear
- Food groups (same as last time) should coordinate for dinner on Saturday and you will need on breakfast and two lunches
- I will need help on Friday afternoon with the vehicles

- We have decided to make the spring break trip have the following schedule:
Friday, March 7: shop and organize
Saturday, March 8: Meet at 8 am and load up, drive to Carrizo Plain, California arriving at about 6 pm or earlier.
Sunday and Monday, March 9 and 10: Studying the amazing tectonic geomorphology along the San Andreas Fault.
Tuesday, March 11: Load up and drive back to Tempe, returning in the late afternoon or early evening.

- Assignment:
Review the basics of Airy Isostasy. Make sure you know and feel
comfortable with the concept and math behind this simplest form of
isostasy: what sets the fraction of a rectangular block of ice that
rises above the water line? You should be able to write a relation
for this in terms of the two densities: that of ice and that of
water.
DUE at the beginning of class tomorrow, January 17, 2008.
Answers can be found in many Intro Geology text books, in
Geodynamics texts, and almost certainly can be found online.
- There is now a 490-level course number: GLG 490 Tectonic
Geomorphology - #35523 (3 credits) Registration is restricted to
require instructor permission. Discussions with Ramon and Kelin about
pre-requisites and preparation is required.
